Moving expenses may be deducted if the move was required for work. There are certain tests such as distance and time. On a side note, meals are not deductible and house-hunting trips and expenses are also not deductible. Temporary housing waiting for a home to become available including storage costs might be deductible.

Note: You do not have to itemize your deductions to be able to deduct moving expenses. This deduction is what we accountants call “above the line” so it is a direct $1 for $1 reduction in your gross income.
